Description
In reading about the beach walk at Okarito north of Franz Josef on the South Island of New Zealand, we read one cautionary note at least a dozen times: “Walking along the beach to or from the Three Mile Lagoon is only recommended within one hour each side of low tide.” We arrived well before low tide and hiked the Ōkārito Wetland Walk and the Three Mile Pack Track though the coastal forest on the bluffs to Three Mile Lagoon. By then the tide was well out for the walk back to Okarito. You can see why the cautionary note! Although the beach is wide at low tide it is quite shallow, and when the tide comes in, there isn’t much maneuvering room up against the bluffs! Nevertheless, at low tide it is a lovely walk, with the blue Tasman Sea on one side and many interesting rock formations and tidal creatures along the shore to absorb your attention. We did get quite absorbed to the point where we started to be concerned about the incoming tide. In the end we had time to spare and were rewarded with the most refreshing ice cream I have ever had at a stand on the beach!

I'm fascinated by the green cliff that closes the panorama. The cliff is not green simply, but it includes all the colors of the picture( ocre, blue, turquoise...). It's the matrix of the picture. Great shot.
