Description
Shiprock, or Tsé Bitʼaʼí (Winged Rock), presents a formidable sight under the stars as predawn begins in northwestern New Mexico. The "battlements" or dikes and shiprock itself were formed 27 million years ago as part of an active volcanic field. Over those millions of years, erosion revealed the incredible structures that we see today. Named for the 19th century shipper clips, Shiprock still carries religious and cultural significance for the Navajo people today.
